Welcome to Waxahachie

Mayor Joe Jenkins

As Mayor of Waxahachie, welcome to our historic community.  Please come and visit us or perhaps come and make Waxahachie your home.  You will find our city full of many warm and friendly people.

Waxahachie is known as the Gingerbread City because of our many old historic Victorian homes.  We have also been designated as the Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas by the Texas Legislature.

Our citizens are proud of our historic downtown with many antique shops and outstanding restaurants.  At the center of our downtown square is the beautiful Ellis County Courthouse, which was built in 1895 and has recently been restored to its original charm and architectural beauty.  Just to visit this historic courthouse is worth the visit.

We are also proud of our City Parks and our newly developed Waxahachie Creek Hike and Bike Trail.  This trail wanders alongside a beautiful wooded creek.

Sims Library, a beautiful old historic building with modern library services serves the city well.  Baylor Hospital, a part of the Baylor Hospital System out of Dallas, provides quality up to date medical services to the entire community.

Waxahachie Independent School District offers our children an outstanding variety of educational opportunities from academics to the arts, music and athletics.  To prepare for the future the district has opened several buildings in the last few years including Marvin Elementary School, a facility dedicated to pre-kindergarteners and kindergarteners, Wedgeworth Elementary and the Ninth Grade Academy.  Plans are now in place to establish a new Global High School, a high school that will specialize in an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math.  These plans also include a new elementary school, a new sixth grade school and a new junior high school.

We also have two institutions of higher learning, Navarro College and Southwestern Assemblies of God University.  Both of these educational institutions are growing and both are currently involved in major building expansions.

We are also proud of our Ellis County Museum, which is located "on the square," the Art Museum on Main Street and the Chautauqua, in Getzendaner Park.  We are also blessed with many fine and very active Churches.

Waxahachie is not only friendly to our visitors and neighbors but our city is also a friend to business.  We have a broad range of businesses and industries in Waxahachie and we are increasingly becoming a major retail center for the surrounding area.  Our Midway Airport is growing rapidly and plans are in place to expand the airport facilities and the runways.  Please remember our town if you are considering a new business location.

Our town is ideally located both as a place to live and also for business and industry.  We are located on Interstate Highway 35E and State Highway 287, just 25 miles from Dallas and 35 miles from Fort Worth.

I love Waxahachie and I am sure you will too.  Come and see us real soon.

Joe Jenkins, Mayor
City of Waxahachie
