MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR - March 20, 2020

Message from Mayor David Hill – March 20

As we continue to make every effort to keep our community safe and healthy during this time, City staff and officials are working closely with our local emergency management teams, also constantly communicating with Ellis County and the State of Texas to stay up-to-date on the latest information and preventative measures. We are fortunate that as of the time of this message we still have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) here in Waxahachie.

We are still encouraging our Citizens to each do their part with diligent handwashing, social distancing, cough control, and surface disinfecting. The public is asked to adhere to the recommended guidelines for prevention to ensure our community remains healthy.

Per these recommended preventative measures, we have also made the decision to close City Hall to public visitors for the time being. Staff is still available for our Citizens, and available through telephone and online resources. We have also closed the Waxahachie Civic Center, Waxahachie Sports Complex, Waxahachie Senior Activity Center, and all park restrooms.

These restrictions are also in line with Governor Abbott’s Executive Order that prohibits social gatherings of groups of 10 or more people, prohibits dine-in eating at restaurants and bars, and also prohibits visitation at nursing homes. Drive-thru and takeout/curbside/delivery dining is allowed. This order is effective as of 11:59 p.m. on March 20, 2020 and continuing through April 3, 2020 and is subject to extension.

Governor Abbott has also issued another Executive Order allowing municipalities to move local elections to November. While a decision has not yet been made on this for Waxahachie, I can tell you that we are giving very thoughtful consideration to this matter and will soon act accordingly in the best interest of the health and safety of our community.

I want to thank each of our community members for doing their part to help us get to the other side of this temporary situation. I also want to encourage you, if you are able, to support our local businesses. Takeout and online shopping for our retailers will be key in helping our local business owners weather this storm.

A page has also been added to the City website at www.waxahachie.com that includes many links, contact information, and general COVID-19 information to help our citizens navigate through this. As mentioned above, the City of Waxahachie staff and leadership continues to constantly monitor this situation. We truly live in one of the best cities in Texas, and I know that we will all do our part to get through this. Thank you for being Hachie Heart Strong!
