Following the recent vandalism of the Waxahachie City Cemetery, numerous local residents and businesses have expressed desire to help rebuild and repair the damage done to our historic cemetery. Our City Staff and Leadership is overcome with gratitude from these requests and want to communicate to our amazing community the best ways to help.
We ask that any work done in the cemetery be coordinated through our Parks and Recreation team, which oversees and maintains the cemetery. Many of the damaged stones are very heavy and moving or raising them requires special equipment and we want to avoid injuries of those trying to help. Additionally, many of the damaged stones are over 100 years old and require special care and procedures in repairing. Many of our residents have also offered financial assistance. This is helpful and appreciated as these repairs will be very costly. A fund has been set up at the City of Waxahachie in which tax-deductible donations can be made. Donations may be made in person (cash, check, credit card) at City Hall, 401 S. Rogers, or mailed to City of Waxahachie, P.O. Box 757, Waxahachie, Texas 75168. Please include CEMETERY DONATION on the memo. Credit card donations may also be accepted by calling 469-309-4170 (wait for prompts to speak to a billing clerk). Citizens are encouraged to make donations to the City directly instead of using online donation services such as GoFundMe. In most cases, these platforms have very high service fees, which is taken out of the donation amounts.
For those who have specifically offered to contribute to a reward, sufficient funding exists with CrimeStoppers and while donations to CrimeStoppers are appreciated, the need is greater for funding of the repairs and restoration of the cemetery.
Regarding the investigation, it has now been determined that this crime occurred after noon on Saturday, February 26 and before 8am on Monday, February 28.
